In a story published in August 2011, WFMZ 69 news reports that the Department of Education has changed the way high school graduation rates are calculated across the country. Under the new system, Allentown’s graduation rate dropped to 61% from the 70% previously calculated. “We have too many students, shamefully too many students, who didn’t make it from the 9th grade to the 12th grade year,” said ASD Superintendent Gerald Zahorchak.
